Quilts and fabric exchange from our Trunks

look at a few of the things for exchange

We had a “trunk” show for members in January. Lots of fun was had by all as we walked from car trunk to SUV back to peruse what everyone had to exchange.  Boy, what a plethora of goodies was found. We all went home satisfied and with a cleaner trunk, except for the items we found in the other member’s trunks!  It was soo much fun we decided we wanted to do this again in a few months.

Quilts galore and many more

Colorful Quilt by OMQG member Barb H
Another quilt by Barb H. Boy is she prolific!

Welcome to the colorful world of quilts. We had a hybrid in person + zoom meeting in January 2022 for the Oahu Modern Quilt Guild in Honolulu, Hawaii.  Those of us who attended were treated to a mini show of quilts made by Barb H in a member highlight section of the meeting.  View some of her quilts in this blog.  We also saw a youtube video of changing up quilt grid patterns by renowned quilt artist Jacquie Gering. These youtube videos are available to all who join the guild as membership also includes access to the Modern Quilt Guild resources. Those who attended by zoom were able to see the video and the member highlight.  We hope to have another hybrid meeting on February 16. Thanks to all members who attended and special thanks to Lynn for being the Zoom meeting host.

“Baby mine don’t you cry, Baby mine dry your eyes. Rest your head close to my heart“

Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children in Honolulu, Hawaii recently requested specially sized baby quilts for the Neonatal ICU.  They are urgently needed.

They will be used to cover the incubators and need to be small (no more than 33 inches by 33 inches) so they won’t get in the way of all the equipment. They don’t need to be fancy. Also, when parents come in to see their babies (especially for the first time) the plastic cover of the incubator, all the tubes and such can be quite overwhelming for the new mom & dad. The staff have found that having a quilt covering the plastic softens the scene & helps the parents a lot.

We recently were able to donate 76 larger baby quilts made by the Oahu Modern Quilt Guild members to the regular nursery of Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children. Let’s see if we can sew and donate both sizes of baby quilts and surpass our recent donation.

If you want to help us with either endeavor, please contact Sue at 808quilts@gmail.com.

Aloha Shirt Quilt Challenge

quilts made from aloha shirts
Can you hear the music playing from the ukulele and see the beautiful hibiscus?

Don’t you love quilting challenges?  It’s a good way to motivate you to become creative and use all your skills.  In Hawaii, many of us have old aloha shirts.  What to do with them?  Well, someone came up with a challenge of using the aloha shirts in a quilt! You needed to show a picture of the aloha shirts before you cut them up, then we revealed our finished quilts at our Christmas sew along we had. Here are two of the many contenders.

Here’s another spectacular quilt. It’s a honu, a green sea turtle.

Love challenges?  Want to know what the next one is? Visit us at our meetings.  The first meeting is complimentary. Our next meeting is January 19, 2022 and we’re trying to actually have a “face to face” (or rather mask to mask) meeting in addition to having a zoom meeting that night.  Wish us luck in presenting a hybrid type of meeting. Email us at communications@oahumodernquiltguild.com for a zoom link.

These feet are made for walking!

At a recent Oahu Modern Quilt guild monthly zoom meeting, a member showed some of her quilts in our show and tell. She wanted to do more with her walking foot and searched out various ways to use the walking foot.  Here is one of her quilts.

Isn’t this a great and imaginative way to add complexity to your quit? Amazing what you can do with a walking foot and “straight” line sewing. For all those times when you don’t want to use free motion quilting this is sure an inspiration to learn to better use your walking foot.

Also mentioned by the member were these well known quilting teachers and their websites/youtube videos that helped guide her walking foot explorations.  Jacquie Gering: https://www.jacquiegering.com. Anglela Walters: midnight quilt show – quilting with a walking foot. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CPpZCLWB2nk. Just so you know, we don’t get any remuneration from any of the products or links that are mentioned.

New Year’s Goal:  Learn a new quilting technique or improve on one. What quilting technique do you want to learn for the new year?

Happy Holidays to all and a Merry Christmas to you

Happily Sewing Christmas Projects

We were finally able to meet in person, albeit with masks and social distancing.  The program chairpersons arranged a wonderful site so we could gather and sew.  We even had two projects to sew. One was a quilted Christmas stocking. We had to cut out all our material, piece together, and sew and quilt the stockings. What fun! We’ll show pictures of the finished stockings at our next meeting in January.

What sewing tools can you find on the tree?

Our other project was a cute double-sided draw string bag made from two fat quarter pieces. Quick and easy to do for that last minute Christmas gift.

We even had a Christmas tree that was decorated with sewing tools.

Our next meeting is January 19, 2022. We might even be able to meet in person.  Looking forward to that.

Holidays are time for family and friends

1920 Dresden Plate Quilt

At our November meeting a member shared some photos of heritage quilts she has in her family. One was a Dresden plate pattern and another a double wedding ring. Both were from the 1920’s. The colors are so fresh and the quilting (probably by hand) is so intricate.  She mentioned that she didn’t get into quilting until later in life and was inspired by these family quilts.  So, it’s never too late to start! And we have it easier on quilting, as there’s something called the electric sewing machine, walking feet, and electric long arm quilters.

Do you have any cherished quilt from your family or friends?

More Christmas Gifts to sew

We just had our November 2021 meeting, and an Oahu Modern Quilt Guild member showed a bag she made from a kit.  She said the bag was super easy and the kit came with everything needed, including a link to a video showing a step by step tutorial for sewing the bag. Zebra figurines not included, they are from the member’s collection. Aren’t they cute?

What are you sewing for Christmas?

The kit is from from Renaissance Ribbons . Or you can also buy just the pattern on by ByAnnie website.

Just so you know, we don’t get any renumeration from any of the products or links that are mentioned

We won’t be having a December meeting, but you can join us for our January meeting. If you want to join us for a zoom meeting, email us to get a link. The first meeting is complimentary. Email us communications@oahumodernquiltguild.com.
