Pincushion swap with the Great Lakes Modern Quilt Guild

We announced at our January meeting that we would be having a pincushion swap with the Great Lakes Modern Quilt Guild, and here are the details!

Crazy Mom Quilts pincushion
Example with modern fabric and linen. From the Plenty of Pincushions vol 1 pattern by Amanda Jean Nyberg.
  • Make a pincushion
  • No more than 5″ across
  • Use modern fabrics
  • Stuff your pincushion with whatever you want (stuffing, crushed walnut shells…)
  • Bring your pincushion to our March 15, 2017 meeting. (If you can’t be there, send it with a friend.)
  • Attach a brief bio about yourself so whoever receives your pincushion can learn a little bit about you. Here are some things you might want to include in your bio:
    • How long you’ve been sewing
    • How you became a modern quilter
    • Some of your favorite fabric designers
    • Where you grew up
    • A photo of yourself
    • Your email address or instagram handle
  • The guild will take care of mailing all the pincushions to Michigan. You’ll get your pincushion at the April 19 or May 17 meeting, depending on the mail. Then everyone can see the beautiful pincushions we received!

It’s possible that the number of people who bring pincushions from each guild may not match up. If we collect more pincushions than Great Lakes does, you might get a pincushion from one of our own guild members. But that’s okay, because that’s fun, too!

We’re looking forward to seeing your beautiful pincushions at the March meeting!

We presented the three completed quilts and a pillowcase for Oahu Care Facility, but forgot to get photos. Here’s a picture of the pillowcase made from an orphan block, though!

During show and tell, Leslie shared the Poolside Tote that she finally finished after last year’s workshop.

She also made a quilt that came out perfectly, even though she said it made her brain hurt! 😀

We were lucky to have Deb Trail stop by on her way home, and she shared a gorgeous pillow cover that she made from Quilt Lovely.

Norine finished a second travel quilt after Val’s fantastic Jammin’ It workshop!

She also completed her quilt top from Val’s stack ‘n whack workshop.

Boston Commons workshop

On Sunday, Ronnie taught a great Boston Commons workshop! It was an expanded version of the free demonstration she did at April’s general meeting. She showed her students a fun and speedy way of doing a majority of the piecing without ever cutting the threads.

Sharon finished her quilt top in about three hours!

Stack ‘n Whack workshop

On Saturday, Val taught an epic stack ‘n whack workshop to make a hexagon star quilt. With the precision cutting and piecing strategies, it was invaluable having a teacher right there to help us along!

Norine sewed up a lovely Hawaiian fabric quilt top. It’s amazing that all of the kaleidoscopic hexagons were created with the same fabric that’s in the outermost border!

Alli made a Cotton + Steel version. Since she didn’t include a border, it’s hard to tell, but all of the hexagons are made from the stripy Paper Cuts Earth print.

Travel Quilt workshop

On Saturday, Val taught a fantastic travel quilt workshop. The quilts are batting-less, and the front and back are joined along half of the inside seams in a really neat technique. They’re perfect for folding up small and taking on plane trips, and they’re also great for gifting!

Val showed us how to make the quilts even more quickly by using half-yard cuts and strip piecing, and Norine made an adorable one using Cotton + Steel prints.

Roxy finished a happy dots quilt during the workshop.

New quilter Toni finished her very first quilt, ever, during the workshop!

Alli made an Elsa quilt for her niece. 😀

Nancy L sewed a planes, trains, and clouds quilt for her son!

A photo posted by Oahu MQG (@oahumqg) on

Nancy F was the only student who didn’t use the strip piecing method — she planned her layout before class and sewed her quilt together with blocks she had cut out beforehand. It turned out wonderfully!

Wee animals quilts donated!

In December, we donated our two wee animals quilts to Kapiolani Medical Center!

We were so happy with our members’ enthusiasm and creativity, and we were all excited at the thought of new babies receiving the quilts we worked together to make.
a cute surprise on the back

Trinia quilted clouds on one quilt, and Alli quilted dots and dashes on the other,

Bridget and Sue bound the quilts, and we couldn’t be happier with the results!

Ronnie and Mai went to deliver it to the Soldier & Family Assistance Center on Schofield. It will be displayed at the center in their lobby/lounge room where they have weekly meetings and soldiers, including wounded warriors, gather.
the quilt will hang near the entrace!

They got to present the quilt at the weekly briefing. The people at Schofield were all appreciative and loved the quilt!

A photo of the quilt presentation will be published in the Schofield community paper, and we will be sure to share the photo once we receive it!

Thank you Ronnie for finding a home for this quilt, and much appreciation to our members, as always!

September General Meeting

Our September meeting was so exciting with a ton of new faces — our meeting room was full almost to capacity! (Lots of people were still wandering around at this point. :} )

OMQG meeting room fills up!

Business was much lighter after the expo; we went over these items:

  • Holiday fabric basket swap (details in Current Sewing and the Facebook group)
  • Board elections coming up in November! Nominations open now; email nominate@oahumodernquiltguild.com to nominate yourself or another member. Must have been a member for 6 months in order to become a board member. Executive Officer Duties
  • Reminder that the guild currently offers members free webpage ad space for their quilting-related business. Info in Guild Resources and the Facebook group.
  • Trinia is offering OMQG members 20% off quilting services!
  • Upcoming dates: see Events

After that, Trinia did an amazing screen printing demonstration! She showed us how to develop our own screens with computer-printed transparencies and a light based process, and then showed an alternative using sticky vinyl and craft cutters like the Silhouette. She also passed around samples of her own screen printed fabric, which were beautiful! She also provided a list of the affordable and easily-obtainable supplies that she uses to do her own screen printing.

Note: Trinia is now offering OMQG members screen printing workshops by request!

During show and tell, new member Leslie shared her adorable Noodlehead 241 Tote.

Then Trinia showed us the three minis she was inspired to sew after her epic tour through eighty-jillion mainland quilt shops. 😀

Mai shared her Oh Fransson-tastic mini, quilt, and quilt top!

Mai loves Oh Fransson

New member Sharon wowed us with her intricately pieced quilt top…

… and then completely blew us away with her beautiful self-designed rainbow spiral quilt top! There were also gorgeous paper-pieced stars meant to go in the corners and center, but I didn’t manage to get good pictures of them. >_< Sharon's rainbow wip

Finally, new member Joan shared her two baby quilts and cracked us up joking about those 10-minute blocks. 😀

We finished up the meeting by handing out the mixed up fat quarters from our Cotton + Steel swap. Almost everyone participated so it was a big success, and we even made some Cotton + Steel converts! It might be a little hard to tell, but this is a Poolside Tote full of the fat quarter packs we redistributed… I should have just grabbed it and ran out the door! 😀
